“Aurelius” derives from the Latin aureus (golden), mirroring the goldfinch’s radiant plumage. Marcus Aurelius was one of the most celebrated Roman Emperors and a central figure in the philosophical school of Stoicism. This title reflects the bird’s aura of nobility, and natural brilliance, recognising the goldfinch as both precious and inherently dignified.
This painting is number 5 in my UK birds series.
