Golden-headed Lion Tamarin

  1. Golden-headed lion tamarins are small monkeys found only in Brazil.
  2. Their major threat is habitat loss with just 2-5% of their original habitat remaining.
  3. Their habitat continues to be cleared for farming, logging and human settlement.
  4. The failing cocoa industry has meant cacao trees are being replaced by palm oil and coconuts.
  5. In the west of their range the forest is increasingly destroyed and fragmented as a result of cattle ranching.
  6. Isolated populations are threatened by inbreeding.
