The peregrine falcon holds the title of the world’s fastest bird, reaching speeds of over 320 km/h (200 mph) in its hunting dives. Whereas, the white-throated needletail is considered the fastest in level flight, capable of around 169 km/h (105 mph).
Like many birds of prey, peregrines suffered severe declines due to persecution, with numbers once falling dramatically. Fortunately, this remarkable speedster is now recovering, particularly in urban areas where it often nests on tall buildings. I recall, several years ago, watching a pair of peregrines nesting high on the Tate Modern in London—a striking reminder of their resilience.
