In Scottish legend, the wizard Merlin was later known as Lailoken. He was said to be a wildman and prophet who lived in the Caledonian Forest also home of the Capercaillie or woodland grouse. The male is twice the size of the female and is quite magical in its courting displays.
In the UK the Capercaillie is only found in Scotland and is at huge risk of extinction. This is the third piece in my series of UK birds and was selected as a finalist for British Artist of the Year 2025.
Oil on canvas. 100cm x 80cm x 4cm
