Wild Dartmoor ponies are hardy, semi-feral native ponies that roam the rugged moorlands of Dartmoor, in Devon, England. Known for their resilience and sure-footedness, these ponies have lived on the moor for centuries, shaping and sustaining its unique ecosystem. They are an iconic symbol of Dartmoor’s wild beauty and cultural heritage.
The wild Dartmoor pony population is vulnerable. Numbers have declined over recent decades due to changing land use, reduced demand for ponies, and management challenges. Conservation efforts by local breeders, charities, and Dartmoor National Park help maintain and protect the genetic integrity of these iconic ponies.
