Some of the species featured in this painting are more at risk than others. The great spotted woodpecker, which used to be endangered when the artist was a child, has now seen a significant revival to the point where they are no longer considered at risk, unlike their cousin, the lesser spotted woodpecker which is in serious decline. The great spotted woodpecker is included here as a symbol of hope. Also, the Eurasian otter and the kingfisher are not classified as under threat, but that could change since they are dependent upon their habitat. UK waterways are suffering from urban development, lack of protection, loss of skills and knowledge and climate change.
